Film: High above the world

Yves the goatherd draws us into his view of the world. There’s the wild and spectacular mountains, the goats, dogs and pigs but also the people who climb up to see him: a monk with his donkey, a child and young Parisian who know how to milk by hand.

High up, around the old chalet, something out of the ordinary is going on.
Nothing seems to stop Yves: bureaucrats, the capricious weather or even the return of the wolf. Here, there is no intensive animal rearing. With humour, frankness and a philosophical take on life, Yves shows us a vision of the world which goes beyond the constraints of a goat herder’s job. You watch and you take your time. There are the spectacular mountains and their wildlife, the 90 goats, the dogs, a few pigs and chickens, but also the people who walk up the mountain to see him: a monk from Tamié Abbey with his donkey.... a child and young Parisian who know to milk by hand.
How can you find a balance between centuries-old knowledge and advanced technology? How do you find what is essential?
Faced with the absurdities of the system, the goatherd becomes a rebel. Filled with good sense, he makes the best of his situation, happy with the restraints of his life and with respect for his herd.
This is a feel-good film which also asks important questions.
In the second part, we remain high above the world with a short film that tells the epic story of the descent of a herd of sheep caught by the snow at 2,700m in the Haute-Maurienne.
These are precious meetings in the silence and solitude of the mountains.
This is a feel-good film which also asks important questions.
